In the Bible, we read about a man named Enoch who walked close with God.
22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. [Gen 5, NKJV]
Four things to note from the life of Enoch
- Enoch walked with God
- For 300 years
- He did not die
- But God took him away
Enoch was able to walk with God for 300 years. How was that possible? Is it possible for us to walk with God? Yes, it is possible to walk with God.
1. What is the basic quality we need to have inorder to walk close with God?
We need to have a heart that seeks God. A heart that thirsts for God, a heart which desires for God, a heart which has a longing to know more about God. This is the foundation of a deep spiritual life.
Heart that seeks God
Do we have such a heart that longs for God? What is our greatest desire? A person who genuinely seeks God will find Him. Enoch had a heart to seek God.
13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. [Jer 29, NKJV]
Four things to note from this verse
- These are the very words of God
- Seek Me
- Search for Me with all your heart
- And you will find Me
This is the core of spiritual life. If you sincerely and wholeheartedly search God, you will definitely find God.
God searches for people who seeks for God
The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. Psalms 14:2, NKJV
God diligently looks down to find someone who genuinely searches for God.
There is none who seeks after God. [Rom 3:11, NKJV]
Do you have a desire to seek God?
This is what we should do
Seek the Lord while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Lord,
And He will have mercy on him; Is 55: 6,7
Three things to note from this verse
- Seek the Lord
- Call upon Him
- Return to God
Your prayers will be answered
3 ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ Jer 33, NKJV
If you seek Him, you will find Him. If you call unto Him, He will answer you. Also, He will show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.
David’s instruction to Solomon
9 “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever. I Chron 28, NKJV
- Know God
- Serve Him
- With a loyal heart and willing mind
- Seek God
Do all that you can to search God and know God, with a sincere heart. Then you will start experiencing the presence of God.
David’s desire for God
O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water. Psalms 63:1
David seeks God early in the morning. Here, we get to know his great thirst for God. Similarly we need to long and thirst for God.
2. How should we seek God?
Reading the Word of God prayerfully with a seeking heart
Read the Bible, with a great desire to know God, serve God and to seek God. He will reveal Himself to you. You will hear the voice of God clearly.
Find all sources to know more about God
Get associated with godly people, listen to Spirit-filled sermons, attend fellowship etc.
3. Why should we seek God?
To know God’s thoughts for us
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. [Jer 29, NKJV]
God’s thoughts and plans for you is to give a good future. But you need to go to the presence of God, and pray and He will reveal His plan for your life. God’s will is the best plan for you.
God’s thoughts for us are greater
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts. Is 55, NKJV
4. The life of Jesus is the best example to follow
We can learn the principles of walking with God, from the life of Jesus because He was the perfect man who ever lived on this planet, who walked close with God. How to talk to God? How to hear from God? How to walk with God? How to seek God? – All these can be learned from the life of Jesus.
35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. Mark 1, KJV
Five lessons from the life of Jesus
- Jesus woke up early in the morning (First priority to seek God)
- Jesus woke up a great while before day (Chose a quiet time, where there is less distraction)
- Jesus went out (Get rid of your comfort zone and get ready to go to the presence of God)
- Jesus found a solitary place (Find a quiet place)
- Jesus prayed (Full attention and devotion to God)
Jesus went to the presence of the Father, in a quiet time to seek His will and to spend some time with God. This is the model which Jesus set for us. Moses was in the presence of God for 40 days, and God gave him the Law (God’s will for Israel) John was in the presence of the Lord as He got the book of Revelation of Jesus Christ.
Seek God and His Kingdom first!
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
