Bible Portion

14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons, Mark 3:14, NKJV

Introduction

Here, we see Jesus chose the 12 disciples for this reason

  1. That they might be with him (or spend time with Jesus)
  2. That He might send them for the mission
  3. That He may give them Power

How amazing it is! God wanted to do accomplish great things in this world. For that mission, he chose 12 disciples and spent His time with those disciples to train and to educate them. So that He can send them to the world.

Dear brothers and sister, remember, that we are today’s disciples of Jesus, sent by Jesus to this world. The first and foremost thing God expects from us is to be with Him. In this year 2016, would you do this? That is, to spend quality time in God’s presence, so that Holy Spirit can empower you for the great ministry ahead of you. Yes, Jesus really wants you to make some free time, so that you can spend some time in God’s presence on a daily basis.

Here we see a beautiful principle from the above verse. Inorder to do the ministry which God has appointed us, the first thing we need to do is to be with Him and get the energy and motivation from Jesus. Only then, we will be able to preach the gospel and become a powerful witness for Jesus. Without being in the presence of God, you can never be a person who God wants!

Practice the presence of God

The most important thing we need to do inorder to enjoy close walk with God, is to practice the presence of God. What does this mean? What is meant by presence of God? How can we experience His presence?

We can learn these principles from the life of people of God, in the Bible, who have experienced the presence of God. One example is Moses.

And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses. 10 All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and worshiped, each man in his tent door. 11 So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Exo 33, NKJV

God spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. What an amazing experience! Talking to God like a friend. This is the experience of practicing God’s presence. If Moses could do it, we also can do it. Do you want to experience this? Many people experience and feel the presence of God in various ways.

29 Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimonywere in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that theskin of his face shone while he talked with Him. 30 So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.

When God talked with Moses, His face started to shine. This is an amazing experience.

Another experience from the life of Jesus is this:

Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Matt 17. NKJV

The face of Jesus shone like sun. Amazing! The disciples would witness that.

Therefore, spending time in God’s presence is an amazing experience. We need to practice the presence of God, inorder to experience divine presence. The more you are close to God, the more you will experience His presence.

What is meant by presence of God?

God is present everywhere, but when we say that God is present with us, it means, He is available for us, to help us, guide us. lead us and ready in times of trouble. God’s presence gives an assurance, hope and courage for a powerful life.

What is meant by practicing God’s presence?

14 And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. Exo 33, NKJV

From this verse, we can learn a beautiful secret. Here, God reminds Moses of His presence. And Moses requests God’s presence.

Two things we understand from this

  1. Moses enjoyed God’s presence and He longs for His presence always.
  2. Moses asks God for one thing – ie. His presence. One who has experienced God’s presence will know the joy of it and will always want to experience more. Do you want to experience this? Just, ask God to reveal His presence

God reminds Moses of His presence with Moses

Here is a beautiful thought – Even if God does not explicitly remind about His presence with Moses, God’s presence would still be with Moses. But God reminds Moses, because ‘the awareness of God’s presence’ is mandatory for having a good courage. This is the reason why God had reminded numerous times about the presence of God to His saints at various times.

Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Is 41: 10

God promises/reminds Joshua of His presence

No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage.. Joshua 1, NKJV

Jesus promises/reminds disciples of His presence

I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matt 28: 20

20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Matt 18: 20

Jesus promises/reminds disciples of the presence of Father, Son and the Holy Spirit in us

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever John 14, NKJV

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. John 14, NKJV

From the above two verses, we understand that the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit lives inside of us. So actually we have three persons in our body. What an amazing truth! We tend to forget this, therefore someone needs to remind us always. And it is the Holy Spirit’s duty to remind us of this.

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14, NKJV

In other words, inorder to experience the presence of God, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit and we need to constantly remind ourselves of God’s presence in us. And the fact is that, even if are unaware of God’s presence in us, God is still present with us. But when we practice the presence of God, or when we remind ourselves of God’s presence in us, we start to experience it in a greater level. Therefore, we need to meditate God’s word continually to be reminded of God’s presence. Meditating Word of God in God’s presence with a seeking heart is mandatory to experience God’s presence in a deeper level.

Best example: Jesus Christ

We can learn the principles of enjoying the presence of God, from the life of Jesus because He was the perfect man who ever lived on this planet, who walked close with God. How to talk to God? How to hear from God? How to walk with God? How to seek God? – All these can be learned from the life of Jesus.

35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. Mark 1, KJV

Five lessons from the life of Jesus

  1. Jesus woke up early in the morning (First priority to seek God)
  2. Jesus woke up a great while before day (Chose a quiet time, where there is less distraction)
  3. Jesus went out (Get rid of your comfort zone and get ready to go to the presence of God)
  4. Jesus found a solitary place (Find a quiet place)
  5. Jesus prayed (Full attention and devotion to God)

Jesus went to the presence of the Father, in a quiet time to seek His will and to spend some time with God. This is the model which Jesus set for us. Moses was in the presence of God for 40 days, and God gave him the Law (God’s will for Israel) John was in the presence of the Lord as He got the book of Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Seek God and His Kingdom first!

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
