Here are the short notes on the lessons on False Doctrines, as part of Xth Sunday school
What is a Doctrine?
A belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a Church, political party, or other group.
How do we accept a particular belief as a Christian Doctrine?
There are 4 conditions by which we can validate and accept a Christian Doctrine
- There should be a shadow of the particular belief in the Old Testament
- Jesus Christ should have taught or practised that particular belief
- The Apostles (Disciples) of the New Testament Church should have taught or practised about that particular belief
- The Early Church should have taught or practised that particular belief
Example: Proving Baptism as a Doctrine
Is the belief known as Baptism an accepted Christian Doctrine? How do we prove it?
There is a shadow of baptism in the Old Testament: Israel people passing through the Red Sea
Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea (I Cor 10: 1,2)
Jesus Christ taught about baptism
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matt 28: 19)
Jesus Christ practised baptism
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John (Matt 3: 13)
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2: 38)
New disciple Paul got baptised
Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized (Acts 9: 18)
New Testament Church taught about the baptism
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (Romans 6: 3,4)
New Testament Church practised
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. (Acts 2: 41)
Why there are lot of Church Denominations around us?
Churches are functioning based on certain Doctrines. How do we know which is the true church?
Some churches follow doctrines which are purely based on the Word of God (Bible). But some churches follow the traditions or man made rules (commandments of men)
Jesus also mentioned about how Pharisees misled people by teaching the commandments of men instead of the true word of God
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (Matt 15: 9)
Therefore, over the centuries lot of false doctrines which have developed and creeped into the church. We have to identify those doctrines and learn more about how the doctrines are false, and which is the true one.
The next four chapters deals with the below churches or denominations
- Catholic Church and Orthodox Church Part 1
- Catholic Church and Orthodox Church Part 2
- Jehovah’s Witnesses
- Seventh Day Advantists

Assignment: Classify all doctrines of these 4 chapters into this tabular column in simple words.
