In this world, there are troubles.
Loss of a job, sudden bereavement of a dear one, being met with an accident, being diagnosed with a critical disease, natural disasters, and so on.
Who can escape from troubles?
Even Jesus confirmed: In this world you will have trouble (John 16: 33)
You think money can save you from trouble? Maybe to an extent, but not completely. Some things are not in our control. For example: If you have health insurance, suddenly when you are diagnosed of a disease, your insurance may help you reduce the bills. But remember, insurance will never make you disease proof!
Have you heard this famous proverb?
Money can buy you a bed but not sleep. Money can buy you a clock but not time. Money can buy you a book but not knowledge. Money can buy you a position but not respect. Money can buy you medicine but not health. Money can buy you blood but not life
So if you think, you can secure your life with money, I just want to remind you that you are wrong!
Everyone dreams a trouble-free life, but sorry, it is impossible!
Why is it impossible?
The reason is simple: We are living in a fallen world. Let me explain.
Origin of troubles
When God created the world, it was not like this. It was free from troubles. No sorrow, pain, tears, suffering etc.
But when man disobeyed God everything got changed. God punished mankind. As a result troubles came!
To the woman God said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”
Sever Pains during childbirth originated as a result of disobeying God. This is just an example of a trouble.
To the man, God said
“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”
‘Painful toil’ (or hard work), ‘sweat of your brow’ – This gives us an idea why people have to work hard to earn their living all the days of their life.
No matter how much degrees you earn, how much money you save, how much wealth you accumulate, you can never escape from the common troubles of life.
But here is the good news: Real comfort is really available in your daily troubles!
What is real comfort?
To comfort is to lessen the sadness or sorrow of someone and to strengthen by inspiring with hope and restoring a cheerful outlook: to comfort a despairing person. Console, a more formal word, means to make grief or distress seem lighter, by means of kindness and thoughtful attentions: to console a bereaved parent.
Say, for example
Your close friend failed in an examination short of 2 marks. You got to know the news. Both of you studied together, but you passed, he failed. The paper was real tough.
You will try to comfort him, right?
Don’t worry dear, you will pass in the next attempt!
Just try for a revaluation, you will definitely pass!
Don’t worry I will pray!
These are some of the ways we comfort them. But do you think, he will be truly comforted by his words? Deep inside he may still feel the pain of being lost in this attempt.
Same is the case with all troubles in life. People can give some comforting words, and sometimes they may extend a helping hand to get out of the trouble. All these efforts are good, and it is comforting to some extent.
So the million dollar question is: Is real comfort possible?
Is real comfort available?
Or in other words,
Is it really possible to lessen the sadness or sorrow of someone and to strengthen by inspiring with hope and restoring a cheerful outlook?
The answer is Yes!
Let me explain how!
In our previous example, your friend failed in an examination. It was a board examination.
Next day, got to know from the news that Education Board decided to give maximum grace marks of 10 considering the fact that some questions were out of syllabus.
Your friend passed!
Now, what happens is this: Not only will his sadness be lessened, but he will be happier than all the people who passed the exam initially, right?
So he got the real comfort, when his problem was addressed. Actually his problem was the exam was tough, and many questions were out of syllabus. He did his best, but yet he failed. Now when the board decided to be fair, he was comforted.
How I lost my A+ grade?
As I am writing this post, I remember one experience. During our board examination, the total score is the sum of CE (Continuous Evaluation) and Written Examination. I scored 70/80 for Mathematics for Written Examination. I scored 20/20 for CE. My total score was supposed to 90/100. but when I got my mark list, it was 89/100, due to which I lost an A+ grade. I was real sad. Lost an A+ grade, just for one mark. Actually there was an error in the data which was sent by the school to the board. My CE score was 20/20, but due to some mistake, it was sent as 19/20. Then I went to the principal to get this resolved, but since it was an incorrect data sent by school, it was rectified.
In this case, my Mathematics teacher and Principal tried to comfort me, but I was not comforted until I found the real comfort. Let me explain. Read on..
Let us come back to our original question: Is real comfort available? Allow me to explain from the Bible on the real comfort
Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”
Look at the response of Jesus: This sickness will not end in death.
Long story short. Lazarus dies. Jesus was at a distant place. After 4 days Jesus arrives and raises him back to life.
The comforting words of Jesus, “This sickness will not end in death” literally happened.
Here is the difference between comforting words of Jesus and people:
When human beings try to comfort us, they go with all psychological relief statements, because they can’t help beyond a certain limit, but when God who can really do something about it, comforts, it really comforts.
Yeah, it really comforts. Mary and Martha were really comforted.
Now, let me ask you?
In your trouble, do you long for a comforting word from God?
If He says something it WILL happen.
Another story from the Bible
Jairus, an official of the local synagogue, arrived, and when he saw Jesus, he threw himself down at his feet and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is very sick. Please come and place your hands on her, so that she will get well and live!”
After some time
some messengers came from Jairus’ house and told him, “Your daughter has died. Why bother the Teacher any longer?” Jesus paid no attention to what they said, but told him, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.”
What were the comforting words of Jesus?
“Don’t be afraid, only believe.”
Jesus reaches Jairus’ home. He takes the little daughter by the hand and says to her, “Little girl, I tell you to get up!” She gets up at once and starts walking around. (She was twelve years old.)
When this happened, they were completely amazed.
This is the supernatural work of God.
God of all comfort
As you are facing troubles and if God has something to tell you personally in your heart and comfort you, will you listen? The plans that God has for you in your troubles are great, and it will be really comforting.
He is calling you. You are his dear child. No matter what you are going through, He will not keep silent. He is ever-present to help you, comfort you and deliver you
Jesus is calling you to Himself so that He can comfort you.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” Matt 11: 28
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort
The God of all comfort is right now with you as you are reading this.
Just one word from His mouth is enough to comfort you. No human beings can fill that void in your heart. Those words from God’s mouth are real, and it will lessen your pain, fill you with hope, make you cheerful.
The bottomline is this: Only God can bring Real Comfort, and He alone is the source of Real Comfort. Therefore hand over your troubles to Him and see how He will comfort you.
Be of good cheer
In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Let us pray:
Father of mercies and God of all comfort. We come to your presence. Lord you taught us to be cheerful in our troubles. Lord we understand that you also have gone through so much pain and suffering when you lived as an ordinary man in this world. Thank you for your mind to help us and comfort us. Please have mercy upon us, in my troubles. Please bring relief and comfort in our pain. Be with me and guide us, Speak to us, and open our eyes and ears to know more about you. We need you. We love you. Please help me to experience the great comfort that you are offering. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
