And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever. John 14: 16
These were the parting words of Jesus, during the Last supper. This long conversation is recorded in the 5 chapters of John (John 13-17) Hence it is extremely important for us (His Disciples), to meditate these words, as these contain very specific instructions for His disciples, who was supposed to take over the mission to the ends of the world.
Let us meditate on this one sentence of Jesus. It was about the Holy Spirit, whom He would be sending after His ascension.
Note the word, ‘another Comforter’
Jesus speaks about another Comforter. Therefore, it is obvious that the present Comforter was Jesus Himself. Once Jesus leaves His disciples, the next Comforter, the Holy Spirit would take over. What a great privilege!
The main role of this Comforter
“He may abide with you forever”. Jesus in physical body, was present with His disciples only for 3.5 years. But now the Holy Spirit is given to His disciples, so that Holy Spirit can abide (or live) with His disciples for ever. What a great privilege for us to be the dwelling place for the Holy Spirit
How long will this Comforter be with us?
The Holy Spirit, the Comforter lives with us for ever.
By whose prayer, shall we receive the Comforter?
“I will pray the Father”! Jesus Himself prays for us. Father can never deny the prayer request of Jesus, because Jesus prays according to the will of God. It is God’s will that we should receive the Holy Spirit. Hence, this prayer will be answered for sure. The only limiting factor would be our faith and genuine desire for the Comforter
What happens once this Comforter takes over our life?
In another version, this verse goes like this
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever [Amplified Version]
The Greek word used for this word Comforter is Parakletus, which means “called to one’s side”. Synonyms are Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby
Yes, the Holy Spirit comforts you whenever you need comfort. The Holy Spirit guides you and gives you counsel for your daily life. He helps you. He intercedes to the Father on behalf of you. He stands as your Advocate to the Father God who is the Judge. He strengthens you. He is the standby for Jesus, who is the Comforter at the right hand of the Father.
In other words, Holy Spirit will be your all-in-all and will completely take over your life and bring it more close to Jesus.
Thank you Jesus for this great Promise of the Comforter.
The first point of contact, for the disciples of Jesus, were the first Comforter, Jesus Himself. Jesus promised to send them another Comforter.
Now, who is your Comforter? Is your dad, or mom, or spouse, or friend?
Today, receive this Comforter into your lives and enjoy the privilege of walking with God. Holy Spirit will take you to the next level of intimacy with Christ. Yes, Holy Spirit makes you more holy.
Father, we remember your promise in John 14: 16. Lord, I need the Comforter, Holy Spirit. Come into my life and fill me with your Holy Spirit. I want to experience the joy and comfort of the Holy Spirit. I believe and receive by faith. Thank you Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
