Years back, when I was doing my schooling, I attended a spiritual convention near my home. I went to that meeting with a great desire to listen to the Word of God. The preacher who preached that day, was one of the men of God whom God used to influence my life to a great extent, through the audio sermons, which my mother brought from Kuwait. I used to listen to those tapes as I went to sleep at night. Those were like very precious pearls for me. And when I heard that the same preacher was coming to preach near in my hometown, I went with a great expectation to hear the Word of God from him directly.
After the meeting, I ran towards the man of God, to say Hi, to talk to him, to clear my doubts and to get more closer to God like him. I asked him, “Sir, what should I do in order to grow spiritually?” I asked that question with a genuine desire wanting to grow more spiritually, because I have tasted a little of how God’s presence would be. As a little child, I longed to experience that more, and that was all my desire.
I expected some sort of advice which would be something very difficult to follow or something which only great people could achieve. But his answer was simple and straightforward, which resonates in my heart even today, after nearly more than 10 years. And I would like to share with you what he told me.
He said: Son, read the Bible and pray!
I thought within, Oh that simple! I had no more questions. Even though I was doing the same, I decided to set it as my first priority. I went home and started to follow it diligently, and it really worked.
The more I read the Bible, the more I could hear the voice of God. In those days, there were no internet facility nor a computer/smart phone available for me. All I had were some books and ‘the Book’ – the Bible available with me. So there were fewer distractions, and I started to cherish and love it more and more.
It was like a living book speaking to me, according to the need of the hour. I read the New Testament many times. I made notes of it. The more and more I read, I found myself growing more close to God. The Holy Spirit convicted of each and every small sin, even the wrong attitudes which He hates. I slowly began to confess and get rid of those things which the Lord hates, and started pursuing His desire in my life. The result was amazing.
Many times, we give least importance to these two things, meditating the Bible and praying, and go after many other so-called spiritual activities/ceremonies, in order to grow spiritually. But only one thing is needed.
Undivided attention in reading the Word of God, and a distraction-free time in talking to God. As simple as that. The results would be amazing!
Read what Jesus had to say regarding this
38 While Jesus and his followers were traveling, Jesus went into a town. A woman named Martha let Jesus stay at her house. 39 Martha had a sister named Mary, who was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to him teach. 40 But Martha was busy with all the work to be done. She went in and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me alone to do all the work? Tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. 42 Only one thing is important. Mary has chosen the better thing, and it will never be taken away from her.” Luke 10
Only one thing is important. Mary has chosen the better thing, and it will never be taken away from her.
What was that one and only important thing?
Answer: Sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to Him.
39 Martha had a sister named Mary, who was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to him teach.
When you pray, you are sitting at His feet. When you read the Bible, you are listening to Jesus.
God will speak directly to you, first hand Word of God! Not through a preacher, or an evangelist, but directly to you, straight to your face! Yes, God speaks through people, but I am talking about hearing His voice directly. I have tasted that, and I want you also to experience it. All you need to do is to have a genuine hunger and thirst to know more about God and a genuine desire to listen to His sweet voice.
I remember a portion from the Bible, where a person who was reading the Bible as he was travelling in a chariot, and suddenly God sent His servant to him, to explain the verses which he was reading. Click here to read the full story. Then Philip, the servant of God, explained the scriptures, and the eunuch was touched by the Holy Spirit, that he got transformed the same day itself, into a child of God. How wonderful and powerful are the scriptures! If you read it with a genuine interest and with a mind to seek God, He will definitely reveal Himself to you, as He revealed to this Ethiopian officer.
I am asking you to do that same two things that preacher asked me to do: Read your Bible and pray everyday. Let that be your first and foremost priority.
Do you have time for that ‘better’ thing?
Set aside some time in the morning for reading the Bible and praying. Let it be even one minute or two, doesn’t matter! But make sure you read consistently and continually. Good to start with a New Testament book like John. Read continuously. Read one paragraph or few verses today, tomorrow read the remaining portion. Then pray to God, and ask Him what you are supposed to do. When you read the Bible, He will answer you.
