This simple lesson from the life of Billy Graham will change your life

Billy Graham, the renowned Evangelist and Pastor passed away the age of 99 on 21 February 2018. He was blessed with a long life. He would have honored his parents at his childhood 😛

“Honor your father and mother”–which is the first commandment with a promise-so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Eph 6: 2

He could influence millions of people. BillyGraham

I was pondering on this, What made his life so special? Why millions of people longed to hear Him speak?

There are many things which make a man special, but here is one important factor, which we often overlook – the words of a man!

The net worth of person is the sum total of all the words that he speak.

Let me explain.

If Billy Graham was invited to speak for a conference or convention, without doubt, there would be thousands thronging to listen to him. The words that comes out of his mouth is proved to be filled with wisdom, which gives great comfort to the people listening to him. That means, he has something precious to offer, the wisdom-filled words! (Ofcourse the source is God)

If those very words were written as a book, it would become a best-seller. If those very words are made as a YouTube video, surely there would be millions to watch it. If those words are made as a podcast or in audio format, there will be millions of downloads.

Someone asked Billy Graham how long it took to prepare a sermon. He answered, “A lifetime.”

Now, how about you and me?

Are our words of great value?

This is something very serious to consider!

Look at Jesus! There were thousands following Him, to listen to His words.

Even when He was a little boy, at the age of 12, Religious scholars and others were amazed at his understanding and answers

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. (Luke 2)

Later when he grew, many thousands gathered just to listen to His words.

Yes, the words of Jesus were powerful!

As I was pondering on this, I came to a realization, that we need to use our words wisely. We have to speak less, listen more, and be a man/woman of few words.

There is a beautiful proverb

Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent. Proverbs 17: 28

We have three options

  1. Speak whatever comes to our mind (Not a wise idea. We may go wrong)
  2. Filter the thought process and say selected words (Wise)
  3. Think, think, think and speak only if needed (Very wise)

Our tongue is anointed by God, and has a special mission to accomplish. We never ought to pronounce irrelevant or unwanted words with our tongue.

Do not let sexual sin, impurity of any kind, or greed even be mentioned among you, as is proper for saints. Eph 5: 3

If we are not careful, and is using the tongue in an unwise manner, God will never again put His words on our tongue.

But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. Matt 12: 36

I have seen this common in many anointed servants of God: They keep their mouths shut, and when they open their mouth, God fills it with wisdom, which becomes a life giving word to the people in need.

Words are the measure of one’s perfectness

Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. James 3:2

Have you ever used your tongue to speak meaningless words or have you ever given your tongue for loose talks? It is high time to repent. Let us confess and ask God for forgiveness. He will cleanse our thought process and purify our tongue. Then it will become anointed to be used for a special purpose.

Father, we come to your presence. We are sorry for all the idle words that we have spoken. Have mercy upon me and forgive my shortcomings. Help me to be wise, and to be a person of few words. Fill my mouth with the wisdom of God. Thank You Jesus. Amen
