Many people live their lives in frustration, trying to control things which are not in their control anymore. That’s when we become stressed out and spend the rest of the lives trying to figure out what went wrong. It might be about the wrong decision you made, or regarding your career, or marriage or a broken relationship or anything which concerns you. In this post we may discuss some thoughts about ‘worries’
Let me draw your attention to a statement of Jesus. It is very interesting to study the way Jesus presented these things to His disciples
Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Luke 12:22
What do we mean by worrying? Wait! Before that, let’s see what worrying is NOT.
Worrying is NOT
1. Worrying is not ‘PLANNING for the future’
When you build a house, you need to sit down and plan before you start the work.
“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’ Luke 14: 28-30
2. Worrying is not ‘PREPARING for the future needs’
We need to learn from ants on how they gather food for summer.
Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.
Note that it is not ‘greeds’ but ‘needs’
But Worrying IS
To worry is to give way to anxiety or unease; allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles [Oxford]
Or in other words, thinking about a PROBLEM over and over, without actually making substantive progress in addressing the issue. And this itself is a problem to deal with!
You don’t have to Worry
Jesus advises us:-
do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear
The reason is given in His next statement,
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? Luke 6: 25
Jesus challenges our ability to alter the days of our lives. Is it possible for us to add one more hour to our life by ‘worrying’ or by ‘not worrying’? Never, right? So what is the point in being anxious about something which we don’t really have anything to do with? In other words, worrying does NO good to us, nor solves the actual PROBLEM, instead it steals our happiness.
For example, you have a job, and you are constantly worried about losing your job. So, every moment you are on your job, you are unable to concentrate because of this ‘worry of losing job’. Therefore, you are living your present life worrying about the future. This way, you will not be able to enjoy your present work!
Same is the case with our appearance, the place where we are born, the country we are living in, our parents, our children, our intelligence or the ability to walk, read, write or do anything, all these are not in our control. We don’t really have much choice on these. It is given by God freely, and He has every right to do as He wish. So what is the point in wasting our time and energy by worrying over it?
Look at the birds in the sky
Consider the birds: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! …Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin….If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! Luke 12: 24-28
Now Jesus draws our attention to nature. Consider the birds in the sky, they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Consider how the flowers grow; they do not work or spin, yet they have the most beautiful clothes ever, right?
So, what is He trying to convey? Carefully observe the nature, and learn how God has made it all beautiful! In other words, Jesus is trying to explain the goodness of the Father
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Psalms 19: 1
Then Jesus goes on to speak more about His Father God, who really cares for all of us.
How much more valuable you are than birds!
Yes, we as human beings are so much more valuable in the sight of God, because we were created in God’s own image! Jesus is trying to convince us that, if the birds of the air are fed by God, He is faithful enough to feed us as well.
Is God concerned about my future? Is God concerned about my job? Is God concerned about my finance? You might have a lot of similar questions. Yes, God is truly concerned about everything concerning you. This awareness is the first step.
Note the last phrase, you of little faith! What does God expect from us? Faith in Him. 100% simple faith and 0% Doubt. Yes, God expects us to trust in Him no matter what. That’s when we really start experiencing the goodness of God.
Remember, when we worry, we are not really trusting God! He will never fail us.
The #1 reason you need not worry
When you are facing a problem and your friend tells you not to worry, will it not give you a hope that there is some solution available for the problem?
When Jesus tells his disciples not to worry about LIFE, does it also not mean that God will take care of their lives?
Similarly, when Jesus tells them not to worry about FOOD, does it also not mean that Father will be responsible to help them put food on the table?
Yes, Father is responsible and is in control of your life! This is the #1 reason you need not WORRY.
Come on! Isn’t it amazing that God who knows the end from the beginning promises to take care of us?
In those days, there were Master-disciple relationships. A disciple is to serve and follow the Master and the Master will take care of the disciples. So being a disciple of this loving Master definitely guarantees the protection and provision of the Master. What do you say?
If you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, then you become the child of the Most High God and your needs are taken care of! If you haven’t given your life to Jesus yet, you can do that right-away!
Father knows that you need them
And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Luke 12: 29, 30
Jesus tells us that worldly people (who are not yet the disciples of Jesus) are the ones who are worried about the things of this world such as, “What will we eat?”, “What will we drink?’, “Where will we stay?”, “How will I pay the bill?”, “Will I lose my job?”, and so on. That is, people who doesn’t really know God worry about things of this world, because there is no hope for them.
Jesus is concerned about our heart. It shouldn’t be worried about the things of this world. Instead Jesus teaches us to be seeking the things about God and all these things (FOOD, SHELTER, etc) will also be taken care.
So does that mean that we should be careless and not working hard? Definitely not! The idea here, is to build our trust in God, and not on things. The more we know about God, the less we worry, because we know that God is loving and caring.
Here is the key, the more faith we have in God, the less we will worry about the things of this world.
Building your trust in God
The reason is that, when we have faith in God, we know that God is in control of all things of the past, present and future. We know that God is truly able to control things which are beyond our control. When we believe, without doubt that, God will do all things for our good, then everything in life gives meaning. When you are truly concerned about God, and your relationship with Him, you start to build a strong relationship with Him, to that extent which you will be able to perceive everything from God’s perspective. That is when we start to truly enjoy life, because we know that God orders every step of our lives. He directs us, in His ways, in His time.
How to overcome the worries?
By simply having faith in God doesn’t take away your worries. You need to speak it out to God! How do we do that? It is through prayer, that we communicate our worries and anxieties to God. When we share our worries with friends, we get relief, right? If so, when we share our problems, worries and anxieties to the loving Father, who can really do something for us, how much more happiness will we get!
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:6-7
When you present your ‘worries’ to God, He gives something in return, and that is PEACE, the peace which is beyond human understanding.
Is just praying enough?
By just praying and believing/trusting in God, will it bring food on table? No!
We have to do our part as well. We need to work hard, trusting in God, moving as per God’s leading. He will show you the right paths, and guide you into your destiny.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Prov 3: 5-6
Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. Psalms 37: 4-5
Without having a relationship with the Father, the walk with Him is never possible.
How do I know His ways for my life?
Good that you asked! God has revealed His ways and plans for our lives in His Word, the Bible. If you don’t have a Bible of your own click here to order a free copy.
All you need to do is to read the Word of God, with a true desire to know more about Him and with a hungry heart for God. Since the Word of God is living, it will speak to you, right into your situation. I have personally experienced this many times. Therefore, I encourage you to give a try.
God promises that,
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jer 29: 13
Let me assure you that when you truly start trusting in God and His promises, you will start enjoying the abundant life, God has in store for you.
One good news for you
When you truly trust God and love Him with all your heart, God will turn all things, ‘which happened in your life’, ‘which are currently happening with you’, and ‘your future happenings’, for your good. Do you believe that?
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Rom 8: 28
What more assurance do we want? Yes, He works all things together for our good.
