Bible Portion for Meditation
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. [Gal 5]
There is a wonderful secret hidden in this verse, which the Holy Spirit wants to remind us. In simple terms, we can say like this, “If you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh, and if you do not walk in the Spirit, you will fall into the lust of the flesh”. So what should we do, inorder to stay away from falling into the lust of the flesh? The answer is simple! WALK IN THE SPIRIT. What does it mean?
Let’s go a little deep into this phrase “Walk in the Spirit”. Before that I would like to introduce a different phrase used in the same chapter.
Living in the Spirit
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. [Gal 5]
From this verse, it is clear that, we are living in the Spirit, but walking in the Spirit is a CHOICE. Those who are born of the Spirit are living in the Spirit, which means, all those who sincerely desire to live a godly life, are indeed living in the Spirit. The Bible says, “no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” [I Cor 12:3]. Each and every spiritual breath we take is from the Holy Spirit. But many Christians fail in the next step, that is, to walk in the Spirit. In other words, they fail to obey what the Spirit says.
That is why, it is given as a commandment in these two portions above: LET US WALK IN THE SPIRIT. Beginning to live in the Spirit started the moment you were born again, even though “filling of the Holy Spirit” is a deeper experience, which follows, as you wait upon the Lord and ask the Lord. But one thing is sure, you cannot accept Jesus and follow Jesus, without the help of the Holy Spirit. So right now, you are reading this because you have a desire to know more about the walking in the Spirit. That itself is a proof that Holy Spirit is inspiring you. So what should we do? In this verse, Holy Spirit reminds us that, we need to consciously walk according to the leading of the Holy Spirit, else we may fall into sin.
Lust of the Flesh
The next term which I would like to explain is this: Lust of the flesh. If we read the next few verses, it is clearly written about the works of the flesh. When we yield to the lust of the flesh, we do the works of the flesh.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; [Gal 5]
These are some of the items which are the outcome of our deeds, when we yield to the lust of the flesh. So as, Christians, and followers of Jesus, is it possible to do any of these?
Yes, being a Christian doesn’t assure you that you are not prone to any of the above. Those who are living in the Spirit, can fulfill the lust of the flesh, IF THEY DO NOT WALK IN THE SPIRIT.
This is the key: If you are living in the Spirit, you need to walk in the Spirit, then you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. If you are living in the Spirit and is not walking in the Spirit, definitely you will fall in to any of the works of the flesh.
Therefore, if you are able to control yourself by not doing any of the above mentioned works of the flesh, but fall into any one of the above, will you still inherit the Kingdom of God? Now, read the next verse.
“of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” [Gal 5:21]
Now, you might have understood the importance of walking in the Spirit. Let me conclude the above three verses into one simple sentence. If you do not walk in the Spirit, you will not inherit the Kingdom of God. This is WARNING from the scriptures.
So, you might think, how is it possible to live in the Spirit and not walk in the Spirit? Let me explain this
How to walk in the Spirit?
The Holy Spirit will guide us to do the right thing, but He will never force us. The Holy Spirit will warn us when we are about to sin, but does not prevent our actions. We are given free-will. It’s our CHOICE. We can chose to obey or disobey the voice of the Holy Spirit. This is where most of the Christians go wrong. They know what is right and what is wrong, but doesn’t yield to the direction of the Holy Spirit. That is why, Holy Spirit reminds us, that we need to walk according to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, walking in the Spirit simply means, obeying the Spirit. This is how we practice walking in Spirit. So, inorder to obey the Holy Spirit, the first thing we need is a “listening ear”
“He who has an ear, let him hear”
11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. [Rev 2]
A spiritual ear tuned and receptive to the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit is very essential to walk in the Spirit. How do we tune our ears? Humble our hearts before the Word of God and be willing to be corrected and changed, whenever the Holy Spirit reminds from the Word of God. Have a teachable spirit. Forsake the rebellious attitude and be submissive to the Word of God and the instructions of the Holy Spirit. This needs to be practiced on a regular basis, in prayer, fasting and meditating the Word of God. We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to activate the works of the Holy Spirit in us. Spirit gently whispers in our ears, we need to discern it.
Apostle Paul went for a missionary journey to Asia, but the Holy Spirit told not to preach in Asia. So, he and his team turned to Bithynia, but again the Holy Spirit warned them not to go there also. And Paul went to Troas, and got a vision from the Lord to go to Macedonia. Read the below portion
6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. 8 So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them. [Acts 16]
From this, it is very clear that Holy Spirit can direct our paths. What would have happened, if Paul and his team were not sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit? They would have gone to Asia, to preach the Word. But the plan of God was to go to Macedonia. They would have missed the plan of God. Remember, God has a plan for your lives, and the only way you can know it, is through the help of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, be more concerned about hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit, in your daily life, which is very essential in walking in the Spirit
Be obedient to what the Spirit says
Paul and his team, were willing to change the route towards Macedonia. They could have continued their journey as planned, but their first priority was to follow the direction of the Holy Spirit. What is first priority? Right now, in your life, there would be many situations, where the Holy Spirit is speaking to you, to make a decision based on His guidance. And the outcome, will be based on what you chose to do! If you sincerely desire to go as per the leading of the Holy Spirit, God will make sure you follow His path. You need to desire more infilling of the Holy Spirit and the anointing, so that you will start to experience the guidance of the Holy Spirit in everything you do.
These words of Jesus are an assurance that you will not go astray
7 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. [John 10]
Also, in Proverbs, there is a beautiful advice
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths. [Prov 3]
If you are receptive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, and are willing to surrender your plans and agendas to the the Holy Spirit, and is willing to do what the Spirit says, then you will walk in the Spirit, which helps you not to fulfill the lust of the flesh. May God help us all!
Let us pray
Father, we really want to be led by you Spirit, who knows everything. Would you please help us to be sensitive to the voice of the Spirit? Would you please help us to identify God’s voice. Please create a new heart in me, so that I can hear you clearly. Forgive my stubbornness and non submissive nature. Give me a gentle and teachable spirit. Teach me your ways and help me to walk in it. Holy Spirit, fill in me. Guide me and lead me. Forgive all my shortcoming, Lord! I surrender to your divine will! Help me to live in the Spirit, walk in the Spirit and not to fulfill the lust of the flesh and fall into the works of the flesh. Thank you Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
