3 things to do when you really don't know what to do
Last week, on Friday evening, I came home from work, completely exhausted. I didn’t know what to do. I parked my vehicle in the car porch, came to my room, and thought for a while on what to do! The whole week went by with few pending work remaining. But I didn’t feel like doing it during the weekends. Mind was completely blank. Then what to do?

Suddenly this portion of the Bible came to my mind.
9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. Acts 10
Peter went up on the roof to pray
Let me explain the context.
Peter, the disciple of Jesus Christ, was staying in his friend Simon’s house, at Joppa, nearby the sea. Few people were coming in search for Peter, but he didn’t know about it. It was noon time. The meal was being prepared for him. He was very hungry. He didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, he felt like praying, and went to the roof top to pray.
This portion came to my mind. When Peter didn’t know what to do, he chose to pray for some time. That motivated me to pray.
First thing is PRAYER
What happened to Peter, when he prayed?
- He fell into a trance (a half-conscious state)
- He saw heaven opened and saw a great vision
What happens when we pray?
Heaven opens in front of us, which means, God bends down to hear our cries/whispering. The peace of God fills our hearts. A bright new hope comes to our lives. Our mind, heart, soul and spirit gets refreshed. Feels greatly encouraged and motivated. What else do we need? This will motivate us to do more creative things.
When you don’t know what to do, try talking to God for some time! You will really feel the difference. That time is worth it. You will never regret the time spent with God.
But what to do, if you don’t know what to pray for (or how to pray)?
Start your prayer by praising and thanking God for what He has already done in your lives. Instead of complaining and murmuring about what you don’t have, how about counting His blessings?
Bible says,
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. I Thess 5: 16-18
Here are three important things we can do
- REJOICE always
- PRAY continuously
- GIVE THANKS for all things, and in all circumstances
These three will charge you up. Regarding prayer, we already discussed above.
The second thing is to GIVE THANKS
However demotivated/discouraged/stressed we are, if we can remember God’s blessings in our life and start being thankful about it, we will find ourselves becoming joyful, because God’s presence becomes real when we praise Him.
How to do that? What to praise for? Here is a sample
Lord, thank you for this life, that you have given me. Thank you for the food, shelter, water, air and clothing. Thank for giving me good parents/brother(s)/sister(s)/husband/wife/children. Thank you for giving me good health, eyesight, ability to walk, ears to hear, brain to think, tongue to speak. Thank you for giving me a job (those who doesn’t have a job yet, can thank God in advance for giving a job in future. This shows your faith in God).
Start thinking on all the good things God has ever done in your life. If you sincerely start counting, I am sure, the list will go on…
If you sincerely do these 2 things, the third one becomes easy – REJOICE always
Yes, you can REJOICE always.
The Biblical order is
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances
But I think it is more practical to try in the reverse order.
- Give thanks in all circumstances, whether good or bad
- Pray continuously, without giving a moment for your mind to wander
- Then you will be able to rejoice always
So here goes the three things you can do, when you really don’t know what to do
GIVE THANKS, PRAY and REJOICE. This is God’s will for your lives.
By the way, did I tell you what I did on that day? After having a quick bath, knelt down to pray for few minutes. Suddenly many new ideas for the weekend came to my mind. I became so encouraged and motivated. The idea of writing this article also came to my mind. And I completed it that day itself. I challenge you to try the same, and let me know how it works for you.
Now, it’s your turn
