Our Son Turns 2 | 5 Lessons From Little Children

Our child turned 2 years old today. Due to covid lockdown and work from home privilege, we got the blessed opportunity to be with him and witness his growth throughout these 2 years. We praise the Lord Jesus Christ for His love, protection and care over our little child.

There are many things we can learn from a little child. Once the followers of Jesus asked him a question:

At that time the followers came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?Jesus called a little child to him and stood the child before his followers. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you must change and become like little children. Otherwise, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. The greatest person in the kingdom of heaven is the one who makes himself humble like this child. Matt 18: 1-4

This is a commandment from the Lord Jesus Christ: You must change and become like little children.

Here are a few things which I have learned from our child.

1. Instantly switch from Tears to Smile

When he cries, we try to distract him by giving him a toy or pointing him to something he likes. Immediately he stops crying and starts smiling. What a quick switch! Children are good at it.

Are we able to do the same? How long does it take for us to change our mood from sadness to happiness?

The Bible says

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

If we truly become like little children, we should also be able to deviate our attention to prayer, meditation, thanksgiving and attain peace in a fraction of a second. The key is to learn from little children how they switch their moods.

2. Forget, let it go and move on

We try to discipline him by giving him small punishments. But we have noticed many times that, after crying for some time, and when we try to pacify him, immediately he hugs us, quickly gets over the pain and starts playing with us.

When the Lord punishes us, or when we face some struggles in life, how fast can we learn from it, let go of the pain, and move on in life?

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

Let us not lose heart when the Lord disciplines us through various trials in our lives.

3. Laughing out loud from the heart! lol!

A year ago, I recorded his innocent laughter and made it my ringtone. Every time I hear the ringtone, it reminds me of his innocence. He doesn’t need a reason to smile. He is always joyful no matter what’s happening around him.

Even if he is sad, it’s only for a few seconds or minutes. Most of the time he is happy.

Here is what the Bible says

Be full of joy in the Lord always. I will say again, be full of joy. Phil 4:4

Are we able to smile and laugh from the depth of our hearts? Yes, it is possible! Let us learn from little children.

4. Simple Trust and Dependance on Parents

When he needs something, he simply looks at us and cries. We as parents get to know what he wants even without him telling us what he needs. He doesn’t care whether we have enough money or food. He really doesn’t care if we are free or busy. He knows one thing: Cry until you get what you need! What a beautiful lesson to learn from children!

The Lord loves us when we depend on him. When we cry unto God, He feels like a Father to us.

Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. Psalms 50:15

Your Father knows what you need even before you ask. Matthew 6: 8

A child knows how to trust his parents.

Are we able to put our complete trust and dependence on God our Father? He will never fail us. How to do that? Let us learn from little children.

5. True humility

Finally, Jesus says “one who makes himself humble like this child”

The best lessons on humility can be learned from little children. Keep looking at them, watch their expressions and innocence and we will know what it means to be humble.
