Where is Melchizedek mentioned in the Bible? 10 times in Genesis, Psalms and Hebrews

Melchizedek first appears in the Book of Genesis, then in Psalms, then in the Book of Hebrews. Melchizedek comes from two Hebrew words: malak (king, ruler) and sadaq (righteous, just, innocent). his name is found 10 times in the whole Bible. The author of Hebrews quotes the scriptures aboutMelchizedek and explains the royal priesthood of Jesus Christ, according to the order of Melchizedek.

Where is Melchizedek mentioned in the Bible? What is so special about Melchizedek?

In simple words,

Melchizedek is the first priest mentioned in the Bible, who lived in the days of Abraham. He was not only a priest but a king. Usually, in the Old Testament, one is found to be either a priest or a king but not both. Priests are from the tribe of Levi and Kings from the tribe of Judah. But even before Abraham’s descendants came, we see a priest and king Melchizedek. There are no records of his birth, death, father or mother etc.MelchizedekRead more on Melchizedek from the Bible.

The first mention of Melchizedek is in the book of Genesis

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all. (Gen 14: 18-20)

There are five things to note about Melchizedek here.

  1. Melchizedek was the king of Salem (a nearby city where Abraham lived)
  2. Melchizedek was the priest of God Most High
  3. Melchizedek greets Abraham who returns from a victorious battle
  4. Melchizedek blessed Abraham
  5. Melchizedek received tithes from Abraham from of all the spoils received from the battle (Read more about this battle in Genesis 14

The second mention is in Psalms (prophecy by David)

The Lord has sworn and will not relent, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalms 110: 4)

David prophecies about the Messiah. He reveals about the “priest forever” (who is Jesus Christ) according to the priestly order of Melchizedek.

The third mention is in the book of Hebrews.

As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” (Heb 5:6)

The author quotes the same verse from the book of Psalms 110: 4 three times in Hebrews (5:10; 6:20; 7:17). The author then repeats the phrase “order of Melchizedek” in the following portions.

called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek” (Heb 5: 10)

even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. (Heb 6: 20)

Then the author quotes from the book of Genesis Gen 14: 18-20 in Heb 7:1 and 2

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. (Heb 7: 1-3)

Again, he speaks more about Christ as a priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? (Heb 7: 11)

And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. For He testifies: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Heb 7: 15-17)

(for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: “The Lord has sworn and will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’ ”), (Heb 7: 21)
