How do you get things done by your people? Do you threaten them? Do you force them? Do you offer money or gifts to get things done? How do you make sure people don’t leave your team? The greatest challenge for a leader is to manage the people of his/her team, whether it be a political leader or a professional manager or a pastor/priest/parent.
When I closely observed the leaders around me- the church leaders, project leaders, various youth leaders and even my parents- I found that a few of them were very smart in managing their team, but few others finds it very difficult to coordinate the people of their team or to accomplish a common task.
The greatest leader of all times
When we look at Jesus, we find a great influential Leader in Him. I would like to share with you few of the leadership qualities of Jesus- his strategies and how He managed a small but powerful team and trained them to achieve the goal which He had in mind.
Jesus never forced his followers to do something. Jesus never threatened them. Jesus never played dirty politics to get people follow Him. Jesus never gave false hope. Jesus even gave the freedom for His disciples to leave His team. He didn’t use political power or money or fame to attract crowd. He never had secret agendas. He never cursed or criticized or did harm to the people who left him. Still thousands followed Him. What was the secret?
He died, was buried and rose back from the grave. Today millions follow Him. Jesus is the greatest Leader (and will be the greatest leader) of all times. What’s the most powerful leadership secret we can learn from Jesus?
When Jesus was present in this world in human form, great multitudes of people followed Him. Some followed Him to see the mighty miracles He performed and some other to hear words of wisdom, but sadly, later on, many left him, even the people who witnessed the miracles performed by Jesus.
What did He do, then?
Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?” (John 6:67)
In other words, Jesus were telling them that they also could leave if they want to! But Peter, one of His closest disciples’ answer was remarkable!
Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68, 69)
Given the choice to leave, why did the 12 not leave Jesus?
They found something unique in their leader, which none other had! That was nothing but the eternal life giving words which proceeded out of His mouth. The words filled with divine wisdom. Money will perish, fame will soon vanish, power will be once lost, but the words of life will keep us moving forward, and that is eternal life. The disciples chose to remain with Jesus, no matter thousands left Him, because they had found the Person they were searching for! (John 1: 41)
What was the unique leadership style of Jesus?
Jesus truly followed God (His Heavenly Father), and people followed Jesus.
Being a true follower of God is the true way of becoming a true leader
Jesus completely obeyed His Father [God] and He never spoke a word nor did anything without His approval.
For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. And I know his commands lead to eternal life; so I say whatever the Father tells me to say. John 12: 49, 50
So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. John 5:19, 20
Jesus gave us an example on how to become the true leader God wants us to be -that is, it is to obey God, and to please Him in all our motives, intentions and strategies, as we lead. One who is a true follower of God will be a true leader.
Yes, when you obey God, people will obey you. As simple as that! This is true in all walks of life. If you had obeyed your parents while you were young, God will bless you with obedient children. What you sow, so shall you reap! If you had been a good follower of God, God will cause others also to follow your example.
No wonder Paul said,
Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. I Cor 11: 1
It is God who gives wisdom to lead
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
God watches our intentions. If our intentions are pure, and if we totally rely on the directions and guidance of God, then definitely we will truly lead many people towards the right path, else, we might be leading them astray, as Jesus rightly said,
If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.
The end would be miserable. Both the leader and the followers would end up in a big ditch. Therefore watch out! Never follow the blind leader! Follow the True Leader and be the true leader! Ask God for more wisdom, He will truly bless us with divine wisdom, and that’s all we need.
